The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has claimed that more Members of Parliament (MPs) from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) voted for him than those from his own party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), during the 2021 Speaker of Parliament election.
Speaking at the IPR Ghana 2026 National PR Conference and Excellence Awards in Koforidua, Bagbin said his victory was not based only on support from NDC MPs. He insisted that he knew how members of both political parties voted during the election.
According to him, the support he received from the NPP played a major role in helping him win the position.
Bagbin said not all NDC MPs voted for him, adding that a significant number of NPP lawmakers supported his bid to become Speaker.
“I have the details. It’s not all NDC members who voted for me. Walahi. I know what I’m talking about. Many more NPP members voted for me to be Speaker in 2021,” he said.
His comments refer to the January 2021 election, which took place at the beginning of Ghana’s Eighth Parliament. At the time, the NDC and NPP each held 137 seats, while one independent MP held the remaining seat.
Bagbin eventually defeated the NPP’s candidate, Aaron Mike Oquaye, who was seeking to remain Speaker of Parliament.
His latest remarks highlight the cross-party support he says helped him secure the position despite the close numbers between the two major political parties in Parliament.
