Residents of Agyemandiem in the Western North Region have been encouraged to play a more active role in promoting peace, security, and social cohesion in their community.
The call was made during a community dialogue organized by the Western North Regional Peace Council in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), the District Assembly, and traditional authorities. The engagement brought together community members to discuss ways of maintaining harmony and creating a safe environment for development.
The forum provided an opportunity for residents to reflect on their shared responsibility in preventing conflict and supporting efforts aimed at building a peaceful society. Participants discussed challenges facing the community and explored practical measures that could help strengthen security and cooperation among residents.
Speaking at the event, Executive Secretary of the Western North Regional Peace Council, Rev. Frank Donkor, stressed that peace goes beyond the absence of conflict. According to him, true peace is built on unity, mutual respect, understanding, and a commitment to the well-being of the entire community.
He urged young people in particular to stay away from violence, drug abuse, and other negative behaviours that could threaten the stability of the area. Instead, he encouraged them to engage in productive activities that would contribute to their personal growth and the development of the community.
Officials from the Ghana Police Service also highlighted the importance of community involvement in maintaining law and order. Inspector Andrew Obiri noted that effective policing requires strong collaboration between citizens and security agencies.
He called on residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities promptly, protect public property, and support efforts aimed at preventing crime. According to him, community members are often the first line of defence against criminal activities and can play a crucial role in ensuring public safety.
One of the major outcomes of the dialogue was the proposal to establish a Community Watchdog Committee. The initiative is expected to strengthen local security by promoting early warning systems, information sharing, and closer cooperation between residents and law enforcement agencies.
Participants welcomed the idea, describing it as a positive step toward enhancing security and preserving peace in Agyemandiem.
