A 38-year-old man who was arrested for allegedly defiling his 11-year-old stepdaughter has reportedly taken his own life while in police custody at the Agyeikrom Police Station in the Central Region.

The deceased, identified as Emmanuel Cudjoe, was arrested in the early hours of May 10, 2026, in connection with the alleged abuse case.

According to police reports, officers at the station received information around 11:00 a.m. on the same day that the suspect had hanged himself in his cell using a strip torn from the edge of the blanket he had been sleeping on.

In the aftermath of the incident, personnel from the Elmina District Police Command and the Regional Crime Scene Management Team arrived at the station to conduct a scene inspection.

The police stated that the suspect was discovered hanging against the wall of the cell, with the torn fabric securely tied around his neck.

Preliminary observations reportedly indicated no visible signs of violence on the body.

The deceased, a carpenter and resident of Ayensudo, a suburb of Elmina, was subsequently transported to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where a medical officer on duty pronounced him dead.

His body has since been placed in the hospital mortuary pending an autopsy, and relatives have been notified.

Authorities indicate that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death are ongoing.
