The government has called on domestic airlines to reduce airfares and pass on the savings from recent import duty exemptions to passengers.
Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe made the call during the unveiling of Africa World Airlines’ (AWA) new 102-seater Embraer E190 aircraft.
The new aircraft forms part of AWA’s efforts to expand its fleet, increase passenger capacity and improve domestic air connectivity.
Mr Nikpe said the government’s decision to waive duties on aircraft parts imported by domestic airlines should help reduce their operating costs.
He urged airlines, particularly AWA, to ensure that the savings translate into lower fares for travellers.
“We want to seize this opportunity to appeal to all the airlines, especially the leading domestic airlines, to also look at their affairs and let it reflect on the Ghanaian traveller, so that our people can also enjoy some reduction in airfares,” he said.
The Minister also welcomed the introduction of larger aircraft, saying the increased capacity could make domestic air travel more accessible and encourage more Ghanaians to use local airlines.
The Embraer E190, with a capacity of 102 passengers, is expected to strengthen AWA’s operations and improve connectivity on domestic routes.
Mr Nikpe said the combination of lower operating costs and increased passenger capacity provides an opportunity for airlines to make air travel more affordable for the public.
