GNFS orders demolition of dilapidated Osu building after safety concerns

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has ordered the demolition of a deteriorating building at Abebrese Street in Osu in the Korle Klottey Constituency over  safety concerns.

Chief Fire Officer Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong indicated that the structure had already been designated for demolition after an assessment by authorities determined it to be unsafe for continued occupancy.

She noted that notices, including “Danger” and “Evacuate,” had been previously served to residents, urging them to leave the premises.

Officials report that while some residents initially hesitated to vacate, tenants have now removed their belongings in preparation for the planned demolition, which is expected to occur at night.

Philomena Ludroth, one of the building’s owners, confirmed that the family had received numerous warnings over the past month regarding the condition of the structure.

She mentioned that tenants had already left the premises, leaving only the owners behind as they sought a buyer or investor before fully relocating.

Madam Ludroth further revealed that the situation has left them in a difficult position, stating that they are currently contemplating staying with relatives temporarily.

Authorities are urging the public to take evacuation notices seriously whenever buildings are declared unsafe to prevent potential disasters.
