Accra Mayor offers GH¢200 reward for reporting illegal dumping

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly is offering a cash reward of GH¢200 to members of the public who can provide credible video evidence of individuals disposing of refuse into drains and flowing water bodies during rainfall.

Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey announced this initiative as part of the efforts to address one of the primary causes of flooding in the capital.

The reward is issued for each identified offender, meaning that a single report that includes multiple culprits could yield a significantly higher reward for the informant.

For example, an individual who successfully identifies five offenders with adequate evidence could potentially receive up to GH¢1,000.

Allotey encouraged residents to submit complete, usable evidence instead of partial recordings.

“If you just have complete evidence, just don’t go. People already come with evidence,” he stated, indicating that the Assembly has existing cases on file and is prepared to take action once credible material is provided.

He emphasised that the Assembly’s capacity to prosecute offenders is heavily reliant on the quality of evidence submitted by the public, noting that authorities require clear, conclusive footage to take action against those caught in the act.

This announcement comes as Accra continues to face significant flooding, with blocked drains filled with plastic waste, refuse, and debris identified as a major factor exacerbating the effects of heavy rainfall throughout the city.

Experts and authorities have long contended that while infrastructure improvements are essential, altering the behaviour of residents who treat drains and waterways as dumping sites is equally vital to resolving the issue.
