Minority demands answers from PURC over new electricity tariff hike

The Minority in Parliament is pushing for accountability from the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) after the commission announced a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs, effective July 1, 2025.

They believe the hike is unwarranted, especially since Ghana’s key economic indicators like gas prices, inflation, and the exchange rate have remained relatively stable in recent months.

At a press briefing, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, George Kwame Aboagye, questioned the timing and rationale behind the increase.

He argued that the PURC has failed to provide a convincing explanation to Ghanaians who are already feeling the weight of economic hardship.

According to Aboagye, the Minority is calling on the Committee on Mines and Energy to summon PURC officials to appear before Parliament and justify the decision.

“Ghanaians deserve to know why this increase is being imposed. I’ll be speaking to the Committee Chair to summon PURC to come and explain. We cannot sit back while such decisions are made without transparency,” he said.

The announcement has sparked public concern, with many expressing worry over how the increase could affect household expenses and businesses.

Some believe the timing is poor, especially when there’s no clear signal of worsening economic conditions that would justify the rise.

As the date for the new tariffs approaches, the PURC is likely to face more pressure not just from Parliament but from the public as well.
