Minority criticises ‘inadequate’ utility tariff cut

The Minority in Parliament has criticised the government’s proposed reduction in utility tariffs, saying it is far too small to ease the financial pressure on consumers.

According to the caucus, Ghanaians have been paying excessively high tariffs based on outdated economic assumptions.

They estimate that consumers were overcharged by about GH¢1.5 billion in the last quarter of 2025.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, March 18, Collins Adomako-Mensah called on the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to urgently review how tariffs are calculated.

He noted that three weeks after the minister issued a directive, no report has been released, and the public has not been updated.

Meanwhile, he said, consumers continue to see their prepaid credits run down quickly.

“The Minister for Energy must submit the full investigation report provided by ECG. Ghanaians deserve to know the scale of the problem and the collective actions taken,” he said.
