Man jailed 7 years for molesting daughter

A man believed to be in his fifties has been sentenced to seven years in prison for sexually assaulting his 17-year-old daughter at New Edubaise in the Eastern Region.

The man lived with his daughter after separating from his wife.

Per the information gathered, the assault had been going on for years, and in the latest incident, the suspect physically assaulted his daughter after she refused his demands.

Out of fear and distress, the daughter bravely reported the incident to their landlord.

The matter was escalated to the community authorities, and a complaint was made at the New Edubiase police station.

Following his arrest, the man was arraigned before the Obuasi Circuit Court, where he pleaded guilty to the charges.

Based on his plea, he was handed a seven-year jail sentence.

Cases of sexual assault, defilement and incest are common in various parts of the country.

Below are some recent incidents.

On April 4, 2024, a Ho Circuit Court presided over by Mr Felix Datsomor sentenced Sergeant Emmanuel Dua for defiling a 14-year-old girl at Ave-Xevi in the Akatsi North District of the Volta Region.

The 47-year-old Sergeant Dua, who was on duty at a police barrier at Ave-Xevi, was found guilty after he forcefully lured the young victim into a room and defiled her. The incident occurred in September 2021.

In another incident on April 3, 2024, a 24-year-old teacher was sentenced to seven years imprisonment in hard labour by a Tarkwa Circuit Court for defiling and impregnating a 15-year-old student in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality.

The convict, Kingsley Acquah, pleaded not guilty to the charge, but the court, presided over by Hathia Ama Manu, found him guilty at the end of the protracted trial.

Again, on March 29, 2024, a man who defiled and impregnated a 15-year-old student was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment in hard labour by the Tarkwa Circuit Court.

The convict, Kingsley Acquah, 24, pleaded not guilty to the charge, but he was found guilty at the end of the trial.

    Such uncalled for incidents are becoming too rampant. The jail sentences should be increased, to deter others.
