The head teacher of Mafi Seva D/A Basic School in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region has raised serious concerns over a critical shortage of teaching staff, warning that the situation is severely affecting the quality of education in the community.
Richard Benjamin Agordo, who heads the school, revealed that the entire institution, from kindergarten to junior high school, is currently being managed by only two teachers, including himself.
According to him, this has placed an overwhelming burden on the limited staff and is making effective teaching and learning nearly impossible.
Speaking in an interview sighted, Mr. Agordo appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) and relevant district education directorates, particularly those in Central Tongu and North Tongu, to urgently post additional teachers to the school. He stressed that the current situation is unsustainable and risks compromising pupils’ academic progress.
His concerns come at a time when the school has recently benefited from improved infrastructure. A newly completed classroom block, constructed with support from stakeholders, has replaced previously unsafe learning structures and created a more conducive environment for pupils.
However, Mr. Agordo noted that infrastructure alone cannot guarantee quality education without adequate teaching personnel.
While expressing appreciation for the new facility, he emphasised that the lack of teachers remains the school’s most pressing challenge.
He warned that without immediate intervention, efforts to improve academic performance and learning outcomes could be undermined.
The situation at Mafi Seva reflects a broader issue affecting several basic schools across the Volta Region, where inadequate staffing, limited teaching materials, and resource constraints continue to hinder effective education delivery.
Education stakeholders have repeatedly called for urgent government action to address these systemic challenges, noting that they pose a threat to the future of children in deprived communities.
Mr. Agordo therefore urged authorities and stakeholders to treat the matter with urgency, stressing that every child deserves access to quality education supported by sufficient and well-trained teachers.
