Barcelona president Joan Laporta has questioned Real Madrid’s approach to building their squad following Kylian Mbappé’s arrival, arguing that signing several high-profile players does not guarantee success.
Laporta said football success depended on teamwork and collective commitment rather than individual brilliance, suggesting that Real Madrid’s focus on star signings could undermine their project.
“Having more than one rooster in the same henhouse can never work. Football is about the team and team spirit. Without that, the project doesn’t work,” he said.
“They chose individuals and big-name signings instead.” The Barcelona president continued.
Mbappé joined Real Madrid in 2024 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain at the end of his contract, adding another global superstar to a squad already featuring prominent attacking talents.
His arrival raised expectations around the Spanish giants, although integrating several elite players into one team has remained a major talking point in discussions about the club’s performances.
Laporta also criticised Real Madrid over their public stance on the Negreira case, accusing the club of attempting to justify its position through misleading claims.
“I think Real Madrid have lost credibility and are trying to justify it by lying about the Negreira case because they haven’t won anything for two years,” he said.
The Negreira case concerns payments made by Barcelona to companies linked to former Spanish referees’ committee vice-president José María Enríquez Negreira. Barcelona have denied wrongdoing, while the case has remained a source of tension between the two Spanish rivals.
Laporta, meanwhile, expressed confidence in Barcelona’s prospects, insisting that his club were winning and remained contenders for major honours.
“We are winning and are contenders to win everything,” he added.
