A routine operation by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has led to the arrest of four men suspected of engaging in the sale of illegal drugs in Ashtown in the Ashanti Region.

The arrests were made by the assembly’s security task force during a swoop at a sanitation area behind the AshTown Post Office in Kumasi.

According to officials, the team chanced upon the suspects during the exercise and immediately moved in.

Items retrieved from the scene included substances believed to be Indian hemp, hard drugs, packs of cigarettes, cash, boxes of Mashallah, also known locally as Ataya, and a locally manufactured pistol.

Authorities say the presence of the weapon raises additional concerns about safety in the area.

Residents nearby expressed mixed feelings, with some relieved that action is being taken, while others worry about the growing presence of drug-related activities in the community.

The suspects, whose identities have not been disclosed, have been handed over to the Kumasi Central Police Station to assist with investigations.

In a statement, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and safety. It also called on residents to support ongoing efforts by reporting suspicious behaviour and cooperating with authorities.
