IGP orders probe into mass exhumation by a cop

The Inspector-General of Police James Oppong-Boanuh has called for an expedited investigation into allegations that a senior police officer exhumed and bolted with over 10 dead bodies in the Central Region.

The IGP, James Oppong-Boanuh, also appealed to the Chiefs of Gomoa Fawomaye to cooperate with the regional police to get to the root of the said allegation.

A police officer Superintendent, Robert Kobil, is alleged to have exhumed and bolted with dead bodies from the Gomoa Fawomaye Cemetery in the Central Region.

The chiefs and residents of the community made the allegations against the senior officer at a press conference on Thursday, April 8.

At the said press conference, the Odikro of the area, Nana Okofo Kwakye Abeka Acquah III, said the officer who is not from their community came to them with a plea for land to undertake a project.

In response, the chiefs told the officer that the land in question was a cemetery and was not available.

The following day, the chiefs noticed the officer and some thugs had invaded the cemetery, demolished and defaced it.

The indigenes’ inspection showed that over 10 bodies and skeletons were missing, allegedly stolen by the police officer.

Following the developments, the chiefs in the area issued a one-week ultimatum to the officer to return all the dead bodies.

Therefore, the police administration has called on the chiefs and people of Gomoa Fawomaye to remain calm as it commences an investigation.
