John Boadu declares bid for NPP national chairmanship

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has officially declared his intention to contest for the party’s National Chairman position ahead of the next internal elections.

John Boadu announced his decision during a strategic meeting with the NPP Minority Caucus in Parliament held at the Accra City Hotel in Accra.

The engagement formed part of his consultations with key stakeholders within the party as he seeks support for his bid to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.

Addressing the caucus, the former General Secretary reflected on his more than 30 years of service to the NPP, beginning from the polling station level and rising through the ranks to national leadership.

He said his experience and institutional knowledge place him in a strong position to help reorganise the party and prepare it for victory in 2028.

He stressed the need for discipline, strategic planning, and experienced leadership to strengthen the party’s position in Parliament.

According to him, the NPP must protect the 88 parliamentary seats it currently holds while working hard to reclaim constituencies lost to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He explained that the party would need at least 60 more seats to regain a parliamentary majority and warned that such a task required tested leadership and proper constituency planning.

As part of his vision, he proposed the creation of a special committee focused on improving the party’s parliamentary fortunes nationwide.

He said the committee would eventually become a permanent structure responsible for research, constituency assessments, candidate profiling, and resource mobilisation.

According to him, the proposed body would also support parliamentary candidates financially and strategically after the party’s primaries, similar to campaign support systems used in the United States.

John Boadu further emphasised the importance of unity within the NPP, stating that internal divisions could weaken the party’s chances in future elections.

He expressed confidence that his experience and relationships across the party make him capable of bringing members together.

Members of the Minority Caucus reportedly welcomed his engagement and praised his experience, leadership, and commitment to rebuilding a stronger and united NPP ahead of the 2028 elections.
