GIJ still open, exams to continue as scheduled – Management

Management of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) has said the school remains open with examinations to continue scheduled on Monday despite media reports suggesting that the University had been closed down.

The media reports about the school’s closure emerged after students, on Sunday, protested a decision by authorities to prevent them from writing their end-of-semester exams over the failure to pay their fees in full.

The protest resulted in the cancellation of two examination papers which were to be written at 1:00pm and 4:00pm on Sunday.

But in a release signed by its head of Public Affairs, Nana Akua Agyemang-Badu, GIJ denied the reports and assured students that exams will continue as scheduled.

“The Ghana Institute of Journalism wishes to assure all our students and the general public that GIJ is open and will continue its end-of-semester examinations as scheduled from Monday, December 3.”

According to management, only the papers which were supposed to be written on Sunday were cancelled after the protests with all registered students expected to sit for their next set of papers on Monday.

“On Sunday, December 2, the student protests and tense atmosphere on campus led management to call in the police to maintain law and order, and the examinations as scheduled for Sunday were suspended.”

“However, from Monday, December 3, the remaining examination will come on as planned. Therefore, students who have paid their fees and are duly registered are required to take their examinations as scheduled on the examination timetable.”

Eligibility for exams

Meanwhile, the school has said that all students were given ample time to make the required payments of their fees with the University extending the deadline for payment on multiple occasions.

Hence, management said it will only give clearance to students who have made the payments and duly registered to sit for the exams.

“Students who have paid their fees and registered are eligible to take part in exams. These include students who faced challenges with registration online and were assisted by the Academic Affairs Department to register. However, management is still eager to consider any students who paid the required fees by the November 21 deadline and have been unable to register online for any reason”, the statement added.

School authorities further warned that students who are eligible to write the exams but fail to present themselves do so at their own risk.

GIJ SRC, management to meet after students’ protest

The statement from the management of the University comes despite a planned meeting with the school’s Student Representative Council (SRC) later today [Monday].

The meeting is aimed at addressing the grievances of the students who were disallowed from partaking in the end of semester examination

In an interview with Citi News, the SRC President, Emmanuel Kumah, expressed optimism that the outcome of the meeting will be positive.

“There is going to be a meeting to actually address the various concerns that have come up within the next few days. I’m hopeful that exams will resume after the meeting when we have reached a decision as to the way forward,” he said.
