Fare cut fury: Online drivers union threatens protest

The Ghana Online Drivers Union has issued a strong warning to ride-hailing platform operators and transport authorities, threatening to stage a public demonstration.

The threat follows the Union’s rejection of a 15% fare reduction directive issued by the Road Transport Operators.

According to the Union, the directive fails to consider the unique challenges faced by drivers in the online ride-hailing sector.

“We will not comply, there are unresolved issues including high booking fees, lack of regulation, and the continued failure to formally recognize our union. Drivers have been sidelined for too long,” said Francis Tengey, President of the Union.

Mr. Tengey warned that if platform operators implement the fare reduction unilaterally, drivers will be left with no choice but to hit the streets in protest.

“If the platform operators go ahead with any unilateral action, we will advise ourselves and embark on some form of demonstration,” he cautioned.

Beyond the fare issue, the Union is calling on the Minister for Transport to introduce comprehensive regulations to govern the online ride-hailing industry.

They argue that the absence of oversight has allowed digital platforms to impose policies and charges that are often unfair and unsustainable for drivers.

“The time has come for real regulation in this space, we are calling on the Minister of Transport to recognize our union and implement policies that ensure fairness, accountability, and long-term sustainability in the sector,” Mr. Tengey stressed.

The Union’s stance reflects growing tensions within Ghana’s ride-hailing industry, where drivers face rising fuel costs, high commission fees, and little say in decisions that directly affect their livelihoods.
