Multiple award-winning musician Ofori Amponsah has revealed that a difficult relationship experience inspired him to create his song Odo Nwom, saying the emotional pain he experienced at the time unexpectedly unlocked his creativity.
In an interview with Kafui Dey, Ofori Amponsah said he wrote the song during a period when he was emotionally distressed after experiencing problems in a relationship.
“I created that song when I was a bit down. I was going through a relationship problem,” he said.
He explained that he had become engaged to a woman he described as beautiful, but she travelled to Germany the day after their engagement, leaving him in Ghana.
“I got engaged to this beautiful woman and the very next day she was to fly to Germany, and she went, leaving me here in Ghana,” he recounted.
Ofori Amponsah said the situation became more difficult after someone reportedly told the woman that he was no longer at home, when in fact he had gone to the recording studio.
“She called me, talked a lot, and I was so down,” he said.
According to the musician, the emotional state he found himself in that evening ultimately influenced his creative process and led to the birth of the song.
“That was what gave me the mood to sing that song. So actually, I was down and in the wrong mood, but it brought out that creative part of me that evening,” he explained.
He said the experience eventually resulted in the creation of Odo Nwom, turning a painful personal moment into music that would later connect with his audience.
