Don’t Make The Mistake Of Removing Dampare – Kennedy Agyapong Cautions President Akufo-Addo
New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer-hopeful and Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has appealed to President Nana Akufo-Addo to keep Dr George Akuffo Dampare as the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
According to Mr Agyapong, Dr Dampare has performed well since he took office.
He said Dr Dampare has improved the Ghana Police Service, and robberies have reduced nationwide.
“Since I became the head of the defence and interior committee, we have had a number of IGPs, and this man (Dampare), what he has done, I don’t think we are being fair to him.
“Don’t make the mistake of removing him. Under him, the rate of armed robbery has reduced drastically. He has transformed the police headquarters; the place looks so clean and beautiful,” he said.
Mr Agyapong made the observation in reaction to the leaked tape allegedly plotting the removal of the IGP and the work of the parliamentary committee probing it.
Three senior police officers, COP George Alex Mensah, Superintendent George Asare, and Superintendent Emmanuel Gyebi, together with Daniel Bugri Naabu, a former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), were captured in a conversation ostensibly plotting to remove the current IGP before the 2024 general elections.
A committee was subsequently set up to investigate the authenticity of the leaked tape and the claims surrounding it.
The officers made several claims about the IGP during their appearance before the committee.
According to them, Dr Dampare masterminded the recording and the leaking of the tape.
They also alleged that the IGP had political affiliations with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The IGP was subsequently hauled before the ad hoc committee, and he refuted the claims against him.
