Democracy Hub, a pro-democratic pressure group, has announced its intention to hold a three-day demonstration from September 21 to 23 at the Revolutionary Square, across Liberation Road, opposite the Jubilee House.
In a statement, the conveners indicated that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has formally been notified of the protest in accordance with the Public Order Act.
The demonstration, under the theme “A New Constitution for a New Generation”, aims to address critical issues affecting the country, including socio-economic injustice, unemployment, rising poverty, state capture, nepotism, corruption, and the need for judicial independence.
“Democracy Hub, the Convenor of the #FixTheCountry movement and #OccupyJulorbiHouse protests, wishes to notify the public and media outlets of our upcoming peaceful protest under the theme ‘A New Constitution for a New Generation’”.
“The protest will begin at 6:00 AM on 21st September and conclude at 11:59 PM on 23rd September 2024; and is scheduled to take place at the Revolutionary Square across Liberation Road, opposite the Jubilee House. Democracy Hub has formally notified the Inspector General of Police in accordance with the Public Order Act.
“Purpose of the Protest: This demonstration is organized to address several critical issues plaguing Ghanaian society, with a particular focus on socio-economic injustice, lack of jobs, rising poverty, state capture, nepotism, corruption, and the need for judicial independence”.
The group pledged to a peaceful and orderly protest and requested the cooperation of the Ghana Police Service to maintain public order and ensure the safety of all participants.
It will be recalled that Democracy Hub, in March this year, filed a suit against the Ghana Police Service over the unlawful arrest, torture, and detention of protestors during the ‘OccupyJulorbiHouse’ protest in September 2023.
However, in April 2024, an Accra High Court struck out the assault case against the Ghana Police Service because the plaintiff or the defendants failed to actively pursue or prosecute the case.
