High gold prices are Ghana’s opportunity – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has pointed to rising global gold prices as a timely boost for Ghana’s economy, saying the trend presents a rare chance to strengthen the country’s financial buffers and secure long term prosperity.

Delivering the 2026 State of the Nation Address in Parliament on February 27, he said projections of sustained high gold prices over the next three years create what he described as a strategic opening for the country.

“The current forecast for high gold prices presents a unique opportunity to build an economic war chest to withstand any global shocks, improve living standards, and create lasting prosperity for future generations,” he told lawmakers.

His comments followed Parliament’s approval of the Ghana Accelerated National Reserve Accumulation Policy, a plan designed to raise the country’s international reserves to cover 15 months of imports by 2028.

Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson presented the policy, which is anchored on the Ghana Gold Board Act.

The legislation empowers the Gold Board to mobilise foreign exchange and support reserve accumulation through the Bank of Ghana.

Under the programme, Ghana is projected to reach 8.6 months of import cover by the end of 2026, increase to 11.8 months in 2027, and achieve the 15-month target by 2028.

The policy also includes reforms aimed at expanding foreign exchange inflows while limiting persistent outflows.
