Convicted coup plotter granted GH₵2.5m bail

The Accra High Court has granted Bright Alan Debrah Ofosu, one of the six people convicted in the recent coup plot case, bail of GH₵2.5 million while he awaits the outcome of his appeal.

Debrah, a fleet manager, was among those sentenced to death by hanging after being found guilty of conspiracy to commit high treason and treason.

Following his conviction, he filed an appeal and requested bail pending that appeal.

A panel of three justices, chaired by Justice Eugene Nyadu Nyantei, ruled that the applicant had shown exceptional reasons to justify temporary release.

“After careful consideration of the affidavits before us, we find that exceptional circumstances have been demonstrated which warrant the grant of bail to the third convict pending appeal,” the court said.

Under the conditions of the bail, Debrah must deposit his passport with the court registry and can only travel outside Ghana with express permission from the court.

His name will also be placed on a Stop List at all entry points in the country. In addition, one of the two sureties is required to justify the bail with landed property.

Any violation of these conditions could lead to the revocation of the bail.

The decision has drawn mixed reactions, with some members of the public expressing relief that due process is being followed.
