Allow Bawumia to decide on his running mate – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu to NPP supporters
The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has urged supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to stop mounting pressure on Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia regarding his selection of a running mate for the 2024 general election.
According to Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, allowing the flagbearer of the party to willingly select his running mate would go a long way to benefit the party’s unity and success.
The party’s constitution usually requires the vice presidential candidate to be chosen one year before elections.
However, considering Dr Bawumia’s relatively recent election as flagbearer, the party leadership has chosen to waive this requirement.
The party’s National Council, which has the power to make exceptions to the party’s rules, agreed with Dr Bawumia’s request to pick his running mate later for the battle ahead.
The Majority Leader in an interview, expressed his confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s judgment and decision-making abilities.
He also urged the public to grant the Vice President the time and space needed to make an informed and strategic choice to benefit the party.
“This whole kind of intrigues and contrivance will suggest to some people that you are doing this to foist some people on him because he is a northerner, you are tying his hands behind him. That is what makes me uncomfortable, Bawumia is discerning enough, he is analytical enough, he is intelligent enough to make his own decision,” he noted in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on GTV.
“Let’s leave him. He has stayed long enough in the party to know the nooks and crannies of the party. Let’s leave him to make that decision,” he added.
