The family of 90-year-old Akua Denteh, who was murdered on suspicion of being a witch on Thursday, July 23, 2020, at Kafaba in the East Gonja Municipality, has expressed satisfaction with the 12 years jail term given to the culprits by the Tamale High Court.
The perpetrators, Hajia Serena Mohammed and Latifa Bumaye were convicted of two counts of manslaughter, and the prison terms are to run concurrently.
It will be recalled that seven people including the chief of the Kafaba community, Seidu Yahaya, were arrested in Salaga after the death of Akua Denteh in 2020 after which some were released upon further investigations.
The main culprits, Serena and Bumaye, were later arrested at their hideouts and charged with murder.
Mahama Salami, the son of the late Akua Denteh, in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Asaase radio, said the family is very grateful and happy the heartless women who lynched their mother have been sentenced to 12 years each.
“Yes, the family is happy. They are saying this sentence will serve as a deterrent to others. Justice has been done to my mother, so we are very happy about that,” he noted.
