Commercial drivers in Accra have given authorities a one-week ultimatum to remove traders who have occupied lorry stations, warning that they will take matters into their own hands if no action is taken.
The drivers say traders operating at major lorry parks and bus stops are disrupting transport operations and undermining the effective implementation of the new Traffic-Tech enforcement system.
The aggrieved drivers, drawn from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the Concerned Drivers Association and other transport operators, claim traders have turned loading bays, pedestrian walkways and road shoulders into market stalls.
Speaking to journalists, the drivers expressed frustration over the situation, explaining that passengers are struggling to board vehicles while drivers are forced to load along the roadside, resulting in severe traffic congestion and confrontations with city authorities.
“TrafficTech cannot be implemented when traders have taken over our stations. How do you expect us to comply when there is no space to park and load?” one driver lamented.
“Sack all traders from the lorry stations. We are giving authorities one week to act swiftly. If they fail to order the traders to leave, we will sack them by ourselves,” they warned.
The drivers are appealing to the Ministry of Local Government, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), the Ghana Police Service and the Ministry of Transport to take immediate steps to clear traders from all designated lorry stations to prevent possible clashes.
They cautioned that failure to address the issue within the seven-day deadline could trigger chaos and disrupt transport services across the country.
