Strike: Teacher unions in Eastern Region urge national leaders to stand firm

Teacher unions in the Eastern Region have called on their national executives to maintain a firm position in ongoing discussions with government until outstanding concerns affecting their members are resolved.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) are currently undertaking industrial action over unresolved conditions of service and other welfare-related matters.

The unions are demanding, among other things, the implementation of the 2024 Collective Agreement, the proper placement of promoted teachers on the Ghana Education Service (GES) payroll and payment of the Deprived Area Allowance for teachers working in underserved communities.

Speaking at a joint press briefing in Koforidua on Friday, October 2, Eastern Regional Secretary of GNAT, Boadu Anim William, urged the national leadership of the three unions to remain resolute during negotiations with the government.

He cautioned the leaders against yielding to pressure, stressing that the welfare and working conditions of teachers must remain central to the ongoing engagements.

“We will not allow the employer to ride roughshod over us, hence our resolve to keep our teachers out of the classroom until our concerns are addressed,” he said.

The unions have insisted that the strike will remain in force until government takes steps to resolve the issues they have raised.

The industrial action has affected teaching activities as the unions seek the implementation of agreements and payments they say remain outstanding.
