Two people have reportedly been injured after gunshots were heard during a security operation at the offices of Nawara Mining Company at Nsuapemso in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region.
The incident occurred on Thursday, October 1, 2026, when personnel from the National Security, Ghana Armed Forces and Ghana Police Service reportedly went to the company’s premises to arrest the Managing Director, Accountant and other staff.
The arrested individuals were subsequently taken to the Eastern South Regional Police Command for further investigations.
The incident reportedly caused panic among residents, with the Queenmother of Nsuapemso, Obaapayin Kyerewaa I, saying the sound of gunfire forced some residents to remain indoors and seek safety.
She also raised concerns about what she described as increasing insecurity associated with mining activities in the community.
The operation comes amid a dispute over the control of a mining concession involving Nawara Mining Company and CMS & A&A PRO Mining Company, which is reportedly managing the revoked concession.
Nawara Mining Company has maintained that the takeover of its concession breached a High Court injunction issued on February 19, 2026, which the company says allowed it to continue operating pending the determination of the dispute.
The company has also alleged that armed individuals and civilians previously invaded its mining site, seized equipment and gold-bearing materials, and damaged some of its infrastructure.
Nawara subsequently petitioned the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) over an alleged August 12 raid, citing claims including a death, gunshot injuries, destruction of equipment and the seizure of gold and gold concentrate valued at more than GH¢100 million.
The allegations have not been independently established.
The latest incident has heightened tensions in the Akyem Hemang/Nsuapemso area as the dispute over the concession continues.
