A major flooding incident in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region has forced more than 3,000 residents from their homes, with over 400 houses affected after the River Dayi burst its banks.
Several communities along the river have been hit by the floods, with the Zongo community among the worst affected.
More than half of the Zongo community has reportedly been submerged, forcing residents to flee their homes as floodwaters spread across the area.
The displaced residents have been moved to temporary shelters, including classrooms, while authorities work to find more suitable accommodation.
The scale of the disaster has put significant pressure on the Hohoe Municipal Assembly and other local authorities, leading to calls for urgent support from individuals, organisations and other stakeholders.
Speaking in an interview, the Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, appealed for immediate assistance for the affected residents.
“It’s overwhelming. The MP and the MCE alone cannot; in fact, we are not able to. We are calling for support,” he said.
Mr Tsekpo also commended the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the security agencies for helping to evacuate residents from vulnerable areas and prevent loss of life.
He said the situation remained fluid, noting that water levels continued to rise even after the heavy rains had stopped.
He therefore called for sustained emergency support as authorities continue efforts to protect affected residents and provide them with safe accommodation.
