Ghanaian theatre practitioner Uncle Ebo Whyte has opened up about his unusual lifestyle, his journey into theatre and how his childhood shaped some of the choices he has made in life.
Speaking about his upbringing, Uncle Ebo Whyte said watching his father struggle with alcoholism influenced his decision to completely stay away from alcohol.
He also revealed that he does not use a mobile phone or WhatsApp and has developed simple personal routines, including cutting his own nails.
Uncle Ebo said his journey into professional theatre began in 1976. After experiencing early commercial failures, he made a bold decision to fully commit to his calling, even destroying his academic certificates in the process.
For him, theatre is more than entertainment.
He described his work on stage as his “pulpit” for ministry, using it to communicate messages and values to society.
He also shared his views on marriage and Ghanaian traditions, explaining that traditional marriage was historically shaped by social and economic needs rather than the modern idea of companionship between couples.
According to him, some of those traditional structures continue to influence practices such as funeral arrangements and the treatment of widows in Ghana.
