The High Court has denied bail to 40-year-old Senior Salomey Awity Baffoe, who is facing a charge of abetment of publication of false news in the ongoing “Ghana Jollof” TikTok case.
In its ruling on Thursday, September 24, the court cited concerns that her release could interfere with witnesses as investigations into the cyber-related case continue.
The court subsequently directed the Republic to expedite the investigations.
Counsel for Salomey, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, had urged the court to grant bail, arguing that his client is presumed innocent and that the prosecution had not provided sufficient grounds to justify keeping her in custody.
He also argued that the charge is a misdemeanour and challenged the prosecution’s concerns about possible interference with witnesses or the investigation.
Counsel further highlighted Salomey’s responsibilities as a mother of minor children, including a child expected to enrol in Senior High School.
The prosecution opposed the application, maintaining that Salomey was still required to assist investigators with the case.
The State also told the court that her continued custody was necessary to assist investigators in tracing a second accused person identified as “Ghana Jollof.”
In its ruling, the court said the cyber-related nature of the investigation created a real risk of interference with witnesses if Salomey were released at this stage.
The court therefore refused the bail application but directed the prosecution to expedite its investigations.
