The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has conferred a Special Honorary Award on the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu for his exemplary leadership and contributions towards transforming the region into a prominent tourism and investment hub.
This was at the 2026 Volta Regional Tourism Awards ceremony held in Ho Friday (September 18).
The event was on the theme: Celebrating Excellence Beyond Borders – The Blackstar Experience.
A citation presented to the regional minister by the Deputy Chief Executive, General Service, GTA, Ben Anane-Nsiah commended Mr Gunu for his active support for the preservation and promotion of Ewe cultural identity and efforts to deepen engagement with the Volta Diaspora through investment, skills transfer and development partnership.
The citation said Mr Gunu’s efforts in the area of tourism promotion reflected comprehensive vison for the region’s future.
“Through your leadership, advocacy, and support for initiatives that showcase the Volta Region’s natural, cultural and historical assets, you continue to aspire local pride, encourage domestic tourism and promote the region as a destination of immense potential.
The acting Volta Regional Director of GTA, Roberta Okine-Fumador said it was crucial to develop tourism products that reflected national identity, empowered local communities, and protected the environment.
“We must also embrace digital innovation, invest in skills development, improve accessibility and strengthen partnerships among government, the private sector, traditional authorities, communities, and development partners,” she added.
Mrs Okine-Fumador said the future of tourism in the Volta Region depended on the collective efforts of the people to tell their story confidently and authentically.
It also rests on the willingness of communities to create experiences that visitors would remember and share.
The Paramount Chief of Akoefe, Togbe Drake Tsigbe IV, show chaired the function reminded the people of the region that the success of all tourism promotion efforts depended largely on the prevailing peace and unity among them.
More than 20 hotel operators, car rental services, tour guides, traditional catering services, digital tourism, and corporate organisations were honoured at the ceremony.
