Real Madrid defender Raúl Asencio has been convicted of a road safety offence after admitting to driving under the influence of alcohol in Gran Canaria.
The incident happened on August 16, 2026, when Asencio was stopped during a routine traffic check in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, in the south of Gran Canaria. He was driving a Porsche when officers conducted a breathalyser test.
Asencio recorded 0.90 milligrams of alcohol per litre of exhaled air, almost four times the general legal limit of 0.25 mg/l for drivers in Spain. A second test reportedly recorded 0.88 mg/l.
Under Spanish law, a breath alcohol level above 0.60 mg/l can constitute a criminal offence rather than a simple traffic violation. Asencio therefore faced a fast-track court process after the incident.
The 23-year-old footballer appeared before a court in San Bartolomé de Tirajana on August 19, three days after the incident, where he admitted the offence.
The court subsequently sentenced him to a €14,400 fine and an eight-month driving ban. The fine was calculated at €120 per day for four months. The sentence was issued following his admission of the offence.
Reports indicate that the incident did not involve an accident or allegations that Asencio was driving dangerously. He was caught during a preventive police operation aimed at identifying motorists driving after consuming alcohol.
The conviction comes as Asencio prepares for the new football season with Real Madrid. The defender has been dealing with an injury and had not yet made his competitive debut for the club this season at the time of the incident.
