The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is preparing to announce its official position on proposed changes to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
In a statement issued on Friday, August 28, 2026, the party said its Constitutional and Legal Affairs Policy Committee had completed its review of the Constitution Review Committee’s (CRC) report and the government’s Position Paper on the proposed reforms.
The NPP said it took part in the constitutional review process and submitted its views to the CRC before the committee presented its recommendations to the government.
After the government released its Position Paper on July 30, 2026, the NPP’s committee reviewed both documents and prepared a position paper outlining the party’s views on the proposed changes.
The party said the document will now be presented to its flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the National Executive Committee (NEC) for consideration and approval.
“Thereafter, the NPP will communicate its official position on the proposed constitutional amendments to the Ghanaian people,” the statement added.
The party said its position would be based on its commitment to an inclusive and transparent constitutional review process that seeks to strengthen Ghana’s democratic institutions, political stability and national development.
The government announced its position on the CRC’s recommendations on July 30, 2026. Among the proposals it accepted are a five-year term for the President and Parliament, the election of District Chief Executives, a 300-member limit for Parliament, and a reduction in the minimum age for presidential candidates from 40 to 35.
The government also accepted a proposal to allow Ghanaians by birth who hold dual citizenship to contest parliamentary elections. It also agreed to abolish the death penalty, among other proposed reforms.
Meanwhile, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has inaugurated an 11-member Constitution Review Implementation Committee (CRIC) to help move the constitutional review process forward.
The committee is chaired by Presidential Legal Counsel and former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong.
