A young man identified as Douglas Acheampong has allegedly been shot dead by personnel of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) at Akyem Hemang in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, in the heart of the community, where the deceased was allegedly shot at close range.
Reports indicate that military personnel, passing through the area after an operation, spotted a resident, Kwaku Kwebia, an immigration officer in plain clothes, speaking on the phone.
The officers, who were travelling in four V8 Land Cruisers and a pickup truck, reportedly stopped and accused Kwaku Kwebia of being an informant because he was on a phone call.
They allegedly approached him and demanded that he hand over his mobile phone.
Kwaku Kwebia reportedly denied the allegation, saying he was speaking to his brother, but refused to hand over his phone.
The situation allegedly angered the officers, who began heckling him and tried to force him into one of the vehicles.
The incident reportedly drew the attention of other residents, including Kwaku Kwebia’s sister, who stepped in to stop her brother from being taken away by blocking the vehicle’s entrance.
Douglas Acheampong, who had also joined the effort to prevent Kwaku Kwebia from being taken away, reportedly became involved in a heated confrontation with the officers.
The officers subsequently allegedly fired several warning shots in an attempt to disperse community members who were gathering at the scene.
According to the sources, Acheampong was fleeing the area with other residents after the warning shots were fired when he was allegedly shot at close range from behind.
The bullet reportedly entered through his back and exited through his stomach, leaving him with severe injuries.
Community members rushed him to a hospital after the officers had left the area, but medical personnel pronounced him dead on arrival.
The incident has reportedly angered residents, who are planning a series of demonstrations to demand justice for Acheampong’s family.
