Mining must be managed as generational trust – Ga Mantse

The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has called for responsible management of Ghana’s mineral resources, saying mining must be treated as a generational trust rather than merely a commercial venture.

Speaking at the National Mining Dialogue 2026 in Accra on Tuesday, August 18, he said traditional authorities hold land in trust for past, present and future generations.

He warned that granting mining concessions and exploiting mineral resources have consequences that go beyond immediate financial benefits.

“We are temporal custodians of something that will outlive us,” the Ga Mantse said.

He urged mining companies to take responsibility for protecting the environment and supporting host communities.

King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II said properly managed mining could contribute to development through investments in roads, hospitals, schools, potable water, scholarships and skills training.

He called for a mining regime that balances economic development with environmental protection and the interests of future generations.
