Cameroon wins first WAFCON title after 3-0 victory over Malawi

Cameroon have been crowned champions of Africa for the first time after defeating Malawi 3-0 in the final of the 2026 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The Indomitable Lionesses produced a dominant performance at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat on Sunday, August 16, to finally claim the continental trophy after three previous final defeats.

Marie Ngah was the star of the final, scoring twice in a strong first-half performance. Naomi Ndjoah Eto also found the net as Cameroon established a commanding lead and remained in control of the match.

The victory ended Cameroon’s long wait for the WAFCON title. The Lionesses had previously lost three finals to Nigeria, in 2004, 2014 and 2016, making Sunday’s triumph particularly significant. Cameroon have now become only the fourth country to win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, joining Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa.

Cameroon’s road to the final was also marked by strong performances. They opened their Group D campaign with a 2-1 victory over Mali and went on to finish as group winners.

Their toughest test came in the semi-final against hosts Morocco. After 90 minutes ended goalless, the Lionesses won 3-1 on penalties to reach the final. Goalkeeper Michaely Bihina played a key role by saving three penalties during the shootout.

Malawi had reached the final in their first appearance at the tournament after defeating Algeria 3-1 in the semi-final.

However, Cameroon proved too strong in the final and completed a historic campaign with a convincing victory.
