The 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has called on Ghanaians to be more responsible when exercising their freedom of expression.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, said the way people speak and engage in public discussions plays an important role in shaping Ghana’s democratic culture.
He explained that while democracy gives everyone the right to express their opinions, people must also be mindful of how they communicate those opinions.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, he said the words people use during political and public discussions show the kind of society they want to create.
“Democracy requires freedom of expression, but it also requires responsibility of expression,” he stated.
NAPO encouraged Ghanaians to build a political culture where people can disagree without attacking or insulting one another. He said differences in opinion should be handled through respectful and constructive discussions.
He also said when people disagree, they should respond with better ideas instead of personal attacks. In his view, criticism should help people reflect on their actions and contribute to solving problems in society.
“Our words reveal the society we are building. Let us build one in which ideas are answered with better ideas, criticism produces reflection, and disagreement does not cost us our dignity or our humanity,” he said.
He stressed that the goal should be to create a democratic society where people can freely share their views while still treating others with respect and dignity.
