World Cup Semis: Owen criticises England’s defensive approach

Former England striker Michael Owen has strongly criticised England’s tactics following their defeat to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final, saying the team’s lack of courage in protecting their lead ultimately cost them a place in the final.

Reacting after England’s 2-1 loss, Owen contrasted England’s performance with that of Spain, who successfully managed a 1-0 lead in their own semi-final by maintaining possession and continuing to play positively.

“Watch Spain at 1-0 last night. That’s courage. That’s bravery. And then watch England at 1-0,” Owen stated.

The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester United forward insisted England have a stronger squad than Argentina but failed to show the composure needed to see out the match.

“We are a better team than Argentina, I’ve no doubt in my mind. But we deserved to get beat in the end. In fact, it could have been 4-1,” he said.

Owen reserved particular criticism for England manager Tuchel’s tactical changes after the team took the lead.

According to him, introducing three defenders while leading sent the wrong message to the players and encouraged Argentina to dominate the closing stages of the game.

“Bringing on three defenders at 1-0 up. What message does that send?” he questioned.

The 2001 Ballon d’Or winner explained that modern football requires teams to defend by keeping possession rather than simply clearing the ball under pressure.

Referring to a column he wrote after England’s victory over Mexico earlier in the tournament, Owen argued that England’s approach has remained unchanged.

“I wrote it in my Daily Mail column after the Mexico game. Until we understand that courage and bravery is controlling possession under pressure and not booting or heading it up the field 40 yards, then this will always be the end result,” he stated.

England’s defeat ended their hopes of winning a first World Cup title since 1966. Despite taking the lead, the Three Lions were unable to cope with Argentina’s attacking pressure, with the South Americans coming from behind to secure victory and book a place in the World Cup final.
