Residents of Dekpor-Horme in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region have appealed to the government and relevant authorities to urgently address a number of developmental challenges affecting the community.
The appeal was made during a community gathering where youth leaders, speaking on behalf of the chiefs and residents, outlined several concerns they say continue to hinder development and threaten the well-being of the people.
Chairman of the Dekpor-Horme Youth Association, Douglas Senyaglo, thanked the Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana, for his support and contributions to the community over the years.
However, he stressed that more interventions are needed to improve the living conditions of residents.
Access to safe drinking water emerged as one of the community’s biggest concerns. According to Mr Senyaglo, many households still rely on water from the Kplikpa Dam for drinking and other domestic purposes, exposing residents to waterborne diseases and other health risks.
The community also expressed concern over poor drainage systems, saying heavy rainfall regularly causes severe erosion that damages homes and creates deep gullies, making movement difficult and posing a danger to residents.
Another major issue raised was the lack of electricity in parts of the resettlement area, particularly Quarters B. Residents said the absence of power has negatively affected businesses, disrupted children’s studies and slowed socio-economic development.
The poor condition of roads was also highlighted. According to the residents, the road linking Dekpor Basic School, the Market Square and the Chinese Dam Roundabout becomes almost impassable during the rainy season, making transportation difficult and affecting commercial activities.
Residents also called for the revival of a fish pond project that previously created jobs for young people in the area. They believe restoring the project will provide employment opportunities and stimulate local economic growth.
Despite the challenges, the people of Dekpor-Horme reaffirmed their commitment to supporting development initiatives through communal labour and cooperation, expressing hope that the government and other stakeholders will respond positively to their appeals.
