Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II, describing the late Dagbon overlord as a unifying figure whose leadership brought peace, stability and progress to the Dagbon Kingdom.
In a message of condolence to the people of Dagbon and the entire nation, Nana Akufo-Addo said the late Yaa Naa played a significant role in strengthening traditional authority and fostering reconciliation within the kingdom following years of conflict.
“The passing of Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II is a great loss not only to Dagbon but to Ghana as a whole. His reign was marked by wisdom, dignity and a commitment to peace and unity,” he said.
The former President urged all stakeholders in Dagbon to preserve the peace and stability that had been achieved over the years and ensure that the succession process is conducted in accordance with tradition and mutual respect.
“It is my sincere hope that the succession process will be peaceful and guided by the customs and traditions of Dagbon, as well as the spirit of unity that the late Yaa Naa championed throughout his reign,” he stated.
Akufo-Addo further called on the people of Dagbon to honour the memory of the late overlord by safeguarding the harmony and development that characterised his leadership.
“We must ensure that his legacy of peace endures and that Dagbon continues to remain a symbol of reconciliation and coexistence for future generations,” he added.
Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II was widely respected for his contribution to peacebuilding efforts in northern Ghana and for promoting development within the Dagbon Traditional Area.
His passing has drawn tributes from political leaders, traditional authorities and members of the public, many of whom have described him as a statesman and a pillar of unity in the kingdom.
