More than 500 police officers have been deployed across the Greater Accra Region to support the national general cleaning exercise aimed at improving sanitation and addressing environmental challenges in the capital.
The deployment forms part of a coordinated government-led cleanup campaign focused on clearing blocked drains, removing accumulated waste and restoring cleanliness in communities affected by recent heavy rains and flooding.
The police personnel are working together with sanitation workers from Zoomlion Ghana Limited, officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and community volunteers to ensure the success of the exercise.
Beyond participating in the cleanup activities, the officers have also been assigned security duties and are helping to manage traffic to prevent disruptions on major roads and transport routes.
The exercise is targeting several areas considered vulnerable to flooding, including busy commercial centres, market areas and communities where poor drainage systems have contributed to flooding risks.
The initiative follows concerns over the impact of poor sanitation and blocked drains on public safety, especially after recent floods caused damage to properties and affected several communities in the Greater Accra Region.
Authorities have stressed the need for a collective effort from residents, businesses and institutions to maintain clean surroundings and prevent future environmental challenges.
The cleanup campaign has also received support from political parties and private sector organisations.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP), for instance, has encouraged its members nationwide to participate in the exercise as part of efforts to promote sanitation and community involvement.
Environmental experts and organisers of the programme believe the exercise should go beyond a one-time activity and help build a lasting culture of cleanliness and responsibility among citizens.
They noted that regular maintenance of drainage systems and proper waste disposal practices are essential measures to reduce flooding risks and protect public health.
The deployment of security personnel is expected to strengthen coordination during the cleanup while ensuring that the exercise is carried out effectively across different parts of the Greater Accra Region.
