A teacher in the Central Region has spent the past 16 years personally repairing potholes on roads in his community, saying he was motivated by the need to prevent accidents and save lives.
The teacher, identified as Daniel Ato Quayson, has become known among residents for using his own resources to fix damaged sections of roads whenever he notices dangerous potholes that pose risks to motorists, pedestrians and school children.
According to him, his decision to take up the task was driven by the numerous accidents he witnessed on neglected roads and his belief that immediate action was necessary to protect lives.
“I cannot watch people die. If I see a pothole that can cause an accident and I have the means to fix it, I will do it,” he said.
He explained that although road construction and maintenance are primarily the responsibility of state institutions, delays in addressing road defects often leave communities vulnerable.
The teacher said he began the initiative about 16 years ago after observing that some potholes remained unattended for long periods despite repeated complaints from residents.
“Sometimes you report these things and nothing happens quickly. I decided that if I could do something small to make the road safer, I would do it,” he added.
Residents who spoke about his efforts praised his commitment, describing him as a selfless individual who has contributed significantly to improving road safety in the area.
Some community members said his interventions have helped reduce accidents, especially in areas where potholes had become dangerous traps for motorists.
One resident said,“He is doing what many people would not do. He spends his own money and time to repair roads because he cares about the safety of others.”
While calling for more support from authorities to improve road infrastructure, he encouraged citizens not to ignore problems around them when they can make a positive difference.
“We all have a role to play. Even if you cannot fix everything, doing something small can save a life,” he said.
His 16-year commitment has been described by many as an example of community service and dedication to public safety.
