The University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) has appointed the Chief Executive Officer of the Special Group of Companies, Ernest Ofori Sarpong, as its first Chancellor.
The appointment will take effect on August 1, 2026.
It was approved by the University’s Governing Council during a meeting on May 26, 2026, in line with the UniMAC Statutes.
As Chancellor, Mr Ofori Sarpong will serve as the ceremonial head of the university.
His role will include providing leadership, promoting the university’s vision and strategic goals, and awarding degrees and other academic honours on behalf of UniMAC.
UniMAC said he was chosen because of his exemplary leadership, wide experience, and strong commitment to excellence, especially in business development, education, youth empowerment, and community development.
Mr Ofori Sarpong is the founder and CEO of the Special Group of Companies, a business group with interests in manufacturing, real estate, construction, and other strategic investments.
He is also linked to several well-known businesses, including United Television (UTV), Best Point Savings and Loans Limited, and U2 Salt Limited.
A Chartered Accountant by profession, Mr Ofori Sarpong holds a Master of Science degree in Finance and Investment Management from the University of Salford in the United Kingdom.
He is also pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration degree at École Supérieure de Gestion (ESG) in France.
Over the years, he has received several awards in Ghana and abroad for his contribution to entrepreneurship and national development.
These include the Global Dignity Award for Service to Humanity, presented at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and the Millennium Excellence Award for Business Entrepreneur of the Year in 2025.
Apart from his business achievements, Mr Ofori Sarpong has held several leadership positions.
He serves as Chairman of the Governing Council of Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC), Chairman of the EMY Africa Awards, and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Ghana.
UniMAC believes his appointment will help strengthen the university’s relationship with industry, create more strategic partnerships, and improve its reputation both in Ghana and internationally.
UniMAC was established under the University of Media, Arts and Communication Act, 2020 (Act 1059).
The university was formed through the merger of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), the Ghana Institute of Languages (GIL), and the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI).
Today, the university offers higher education, research, and professional training in media, arts, communication, languages, film, television, journalism, public relations, advertising, and other related fields.
