GMet warns of more rain along the coast on Thursday

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has forecast more rainfall along Ghana’s coastline, including Accra, through Thursday, while thunderstorms are expected to develop later in the day across the middle, transition, and northern parts of the country.

According to the agency’s 18-hour weather outlook, which took effect from 6:00 a.m., coastal areas and some parts of the Oti Region will experience slight to moderate rainfall in the morning. The showers could continue intermittently into the evening.

GMet also warned that mist and fog may reduce visibility in forested and mountainous areas during the early hours of the day.

As the day progresses, thunderstorms and rain are expected to spread across the middle belt, transition zone, and northern sector.

For Accra, the agency predicts about a 40 per cent chance of rainfall throughout most of the day.

Temperatures in the capital are expected to range between 25°C and 30°C, while the northern sector is likely to record the highest temperature of 34°C.

The agency further indicated that sea conditions along the coast will remain rough.

The latest forecast comes only days after Monday’s devastating floods, the worst the capital has experienced this rainy season.

Addressing Parliament, Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka disclosed that the floods claimed 12 lives and displaced more than 38,800 people. He said the disaster affected 7,761 households across 25 communities.

The Minister also revealed that Accra recorded 169 millimetres of rainfall on Monday, making it the fourth-highest daily rainfall recorded in the city since 1995.

Weather conditions are not expected to improve significantly in the coming days. GMet has therefore raised the coastal risk level to “Be Prepared,” the second-highest category on its warning scale, and has advised residents in Accra to prepare for more heavy rainfall over the weekend.
