Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has urged his players to view their 2-1 defeat to Croatia as a valuable lesson rather than a setback, insisting that the real challenge of the World Cup begins in the knockout stage.
Speaking after Saturday’s Group L encounter at Lincoln Financial Field, Queiroz said the Black Stars had gained important experience from the loss and must now focus on their Round of 32 clash against Colombia.
Croatia secured victory through goals from Petar Sucic and Nikola Vlasic, while Derrick Luckassen scored Ghana’s only goal.
Despite the defeat, Ghana advanced to the knockout stage after finishing third in the group with four points.
Reflecting on the result, Queiroz stressed that the team should learn from the experience and use it as motivation going forward.
“As I always say, we either win or we learn. Today we learned,” he said. “The most important thing is to take these lessons and be better prepared for what lies ahead.”
The experienced coach described the group stage as only the beginning of the tournament, arguing that the true intensity of the World Cup starts when teams enter the knockout rounds.
According to him, qualifying for the Round of 32 should not be seen as the final objective but rather an opportunity to compete at a higher level.
He compared qualification to receiving a credit card, saying teams must now prove they deserve to remain in the competition.
Queiroz noted that knockout football brings a different level of pressure because every match is decisive.
He said there is no room for caution or hesitation, with teams required to give everything from the opening whistle knowing that only the winner advances.
The Ghana coach also revealed that the match against Croatia provided useful insights into his squad.
He said it was only his fourth game in charge and that the performance helped him identify areas that need improvement before the next round.
He pointed to the tactical adjustments made during the second half, including a switch to a 4-4-2 formation, as part of the learning process.
Queiroz believes the lessons from the Croatia defeat will help Ghana prepare for Colombia, as the Black Stars aim to continue their World Cup journey and secure a place in the Round of 16.
