Croatia beat Ghana 2-1 as both teams advance to round of 32

Croatia secured a place in the Round of 32 of the World Cup after defeating Ghana 2-1 in their final Group L match at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday.

The victory saw the European side finish with six points from three matches, enough to top the group and qualify for the knockout stage.

Despite the defeat, Ghana also progressed after finishing third in the group with four points.

The match was closely contested, with both teams knowing the importance of securing a positive result.

Croatia looked dangerous from the start and eventually broke the deadlock in the 31st minute through Petar Sucic.

The midfielder found space in the Ghanaian defence and calmly finished to give his side a deserved lead before halftime.

Ghana responded positively after the break and increased the pressure in search of an equaliser.

The Black Stars created a number of opportunities and were rewarded in the 73rd minute when defender Derrick Luckassen rose highest in the penalty area to head home from a set piece, bringing Ghana level at 1-1.

The goal lifted Ghana’s confidence as they pushed forward for a potential winner.

However, Croatia regained control of the match and struck again in the closing stages.

Nikola Vlasic restored Croatia’s advantage in the 83rd minute with a well-taken finish that proved to be the decisive goal.

With time running out, Ghana launched a final attempt to rescue a point.

Antoine Semenyo came close in the 87th minute, but his effort was brilliantly saved by Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.

Deep into stoppage time, Thomas Partey tried his luck from about 25 yards, but his powerful shot sailed over the crossbar.

The final whistle confirmed a hard-fought victory for Croatia and ensured their passage to the next round as group winners.

Although disappointed by the defeat, Ghana can take encouragement from their overall group-stage performance, which was enough to secure qualification for the Round of 32.
