A 17-year-old boy has been remanded into custody by the Kuntanase District Court in the Ashanti Region for allegedly inflicting multiple cutlass wounds on his mother and sister during a dispute over a missing parcel of dried cannabis.
The accused, Isaac Opoku, had his plea deferred by the court as police investigations into the incident continue. He is expected to reappear before the court on July 8, 2026.
The victims, Grace Yeboah, the accused’s mother, and Margaret Oduro, his sister, remain on admission receiving treatment for the injuries they sustained in the attack.
Presenting the facts before the court, Chief Inspector Samuel Krah told the court that the accused and the victims are residents of Kokobriko in the Ashanti Region. He explained that Margaret Oduro and Isaac Opoku are the biological children of Grace Yeboah.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on June 21, 2026, at about 8:00 p.m., when the accused, who is alleged to be a drug addict, left 10 parcels of dried cannabis in his room before leaving the house. Upon his return, he discovered that one of the parcels was missing.
The prosecution said Isaac Opoku became enraged and armed himself with a cutlass, demanding that his mother and sister produce the missing parcel. Out of fear, the two women surrendered the remaining nine parcels to him. However, he allegedly insisted they were concealing the missing parcel and threatened to attack them if they failed to hand it over.
Chief Inspector Krah told the court that the accused subsequently attacked both victims with the cutlass, inflicting multiple wounds on them and leaving them with serious injuries. Neighbours who heard the commotion rushed to the scene, rescued the victims, and alerted a police patrol team.
The accused also sustained minor injuries during the incident. He, together with the victims, was transported to St. Michael Hospital for treatment. After receiving medical attention, Isaac Opoku was discharged and subsequently arrested by the police.
The prosecution further disclosed that on June 23, Margaret Oduro’s condition deteriorated, necessitating her transfer to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for specialised medical care.
During police investigations, Isaac Opoku admitted to the offence in his cautioned statement and later led investigators to retrieve the cutlass allegedly used in the attack. He has since been charged with causing unlawful harm.
The court subsequently remanded the teenager into custody to allow the police to complete investigations before his next appearance on July 8.
