Electricity tariffs increases by 3.49%, water by 0.85% effective July 1

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission has announced an upward adjustment in electricity and water tariffs, with electricity tariffs increasing by 3.49% and water tariffs rising by 0.85%, effective July 1, 2026.

The Commission said the adjustment forms part of its quarterly tariff review mechanism, which takes into account key economic and operational indicators, including inflation, exchange rate movements, fuel costs, electricity generation mix and the operational requirements of utility service providers.

In a statement, PURC explained that the review was necessary to ensure the continued financial viability of utility companies while balancing the interests of consumers.

“The Commission has approved an upward adjustment of 3.49% in electricity tariffs and 0.85% in water tariffs for all categories of consumers, effective July 1, 2026.”

According to PURC, the decision followed an assessment of prevailing macroeconomic conditions and the need to maintain reliable electricity and water supply across the country.

The Commission noted that factors such as changes in the cedi-dollar exchange rate, inflation and the cost of fuel used in power generation significantly influenced the review. It added that the adjustments were moderated to minimise the impact on consumers.

“The Commission remains committed to balancing the interests of consumers and utility service providers while ensuring the sustainability of service delivery.”

PURC explained that the quarterly tariff review mechanism is designed to prevent the accumulation of large under-recoveries by utility providers and to ensure that tariffs reflect prevailing economic conditions.

The latest adjustment means households, businesses and industrial consumers will pay slightly more for electricity and water services beginning July 1.

The Commission, however, assured consumers that it would continue to monitor the performance of utility providers to ensure value for money and improved service delivery.

“Consumers are entitled to efficient and reliable services, and the Commission will continue to hold utility providers accountable for the quality of service delivered.”

The tariff review comes amid ongoing efforts by government and utility companies to improve electricity distribution, expand water infrastructure and address operational challenges within the sector.

PURC further encouraged consumers to adopt energy and water conservation measures to help manage consumption and reduce utility costs.

The new tariffs are expected to take effect nationwide from July 1, 2026.
