NPP petitions CJ over abronye proceedings

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially asked the Chief Justice, Justice Paul Kwadwo Baffoe-Bonnie, to remove Judge Joseph Yennuban Kunsong, who is handling the criminal case involving the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, widely known as Abronye.

The petition was signed by the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, on May 22, 2026, and was received by the Office of the Chief Justice on June 1, 2026.

According to the NPP, the petition is based on concerns about the judge’s conduct, decisions, and use of judicial discretion in the ongoing case at Circuit Court 9 in Accra.

The party argued that the charges against Abronye, offensive conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace and publication of false news, are not serious offences that normally require an accused person to be kept in custody while the trial is ongoing.

The NPP believes the judge’s handling of the case raises concerns about Abronye’s constitutional rights, including the principle that every accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

As a result, the party is calling on the Chief Justice to investigate Judge Kunsong’s actions and determine whether he should continue serving on the bench.
