Former England and Liverpool midfielder James Milner has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40, bringing the curtain down on one of the longest and most successful careers in English football.
The veteran midfielder leaves the game as the Premier League’s all-time appearance holder after an incredible 24 seasons in the competition.
Milner made his Premier League debut for Leeds United as a teenager in 2002 and quickly gained attention for his maturity, versatility, and work ethic.
He went on to play for Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton & Hove Albion, becoming one of the most respected professionals of his generation.

The midfielder joined Liverpool in 2015 after leaving Manchester City on a free transfer. During his eight-year stay at Anfield, he made 332 appearances and scored 26 goals.
He played a key role in one of the club’s most successful periods under manager Jürgen Klopp, helping Liverpool win the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League title in the 2019/20 season.
He also lifted the FA Cup, League Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and UEFA Super Cup with the Reds.

Across his entire career, Milner won three Premier League titles, two FA Cups, two League Cups, and one Champions League trophy.
He also earned 61 caps for England and represented his country at two FIFA World Cups and two UEFA European Championships.
After leaving Liverpool in 2023, Milner joined Brighton & Hove Albion, where he spent the final years of his career.
In February 2026, he broke Gareth Barry’s long-standing record for the most Premier League appearances. He eventually retired with 658 appearances in the competition, the highest total in Premier League history.
In his retirement statement, Milner said the time felt right to end his playing career after 24 seasons in the top flight.
