Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, will run for a second and final four-year term in January after he recorded a landslide victory in his party’s presidential primaries, according to results released on Sunday.
The ruling All Progressives Congress held its primaries on Saturday, May 23, 2026. During the process, a relatively unknown candidate, Stanley Osifo, contested against Tinubu.
Tinubu secured almost 11 million votes, while Osifo received about 16,500 votes.
Many foreign investors have praised Tinubu for introducing some of Nigeria’s most ambitious economic reforms.
His administration removed fuel and electricity subsidies, ended foreign exchange controls, and revised the country’s tax system.
The president’s chances of winning re-election improved further after opposition parties failed to agree on a single candidate earlier this month.
Tinubu became president in 2023 after defeating his two major opponents in the general election. His rivals later challenged the outcome in court, claiming the election was rigged, but their efforts failed.
Tinubu maintained that he won the election fairly.
